THE SMITHTOWN HORROR. It's no Amityville, but the bar Katie's of Smithtown has Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" shooting there Tuesday through Friday, closing the place Wednesday and Thursday, in search of two poltergeists. "Charlie, we don't mind," says owner Brian Karppinen, 50, referring to a playful ghost featured on A&E's "Paranormal State" and Bio's "My Ghost Story," among other places. "But sometimes a kind of darker element manifests. That's the one we wanna get to the bottom of, what his problem is." Karppinen, who has owned the bar 14 years, says the building itself is on the site of a hotel that burned down Dec. 5, 1909, and held other businesses before becoming a bar in the 1970s. The malevolent spirit, he believes, is why all owners before him lasted only a few years each. "It's mostly in the basement but sometimes it does take over the whole place."
