Dutchess County Balloon Festival takes flight in Poughkeepsie
Drink in the colorful spectacle of 16 hot air balloons lifting off and floating through the sky at this weekend’s Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce Balloon Festival in Poughkeepsie.
The balloons will be launched en masse with the Hudson River as a backdrop at 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Walkway Over the Hudson (87 Haviland Rd., Highland) is a popular place to gather and watch the show. Get there early to secure a prime viewing spot.
The evening launches — 6 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday — occur from multiple sites, a number of which will have refreshments and activities, including raffles for free hot air balloon rides. Waryas Park on Main Street in Poughkeepsie is a family favorite for the evening launches: The park’s next-door neighbor, the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum, will host tethered balloon rides and other kids’ activities at 2:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
If you want to do more than just view the balloons, you can book flights during the festival for $225 per person (contact Bill Hughes at Blue Sky Balloons, 845-831-6917).
