James Gandolfini death: 'Sopranos' stars mourn loss
"The Sopranos" cast members — many of whom have strong Hudson Valley ties — are mourning the loss of three-time Emmy Award winner James Gandolfini, who played mob boss Tony Soprano on the HBO series and died suddenly Thursday in Rome.
Edie Falco, who attended Purchase College, won Emmys for her role as Carmela Sorpano, Tony's wife. "I am shocked and devastated by Jim's passing," she said in a statement. "He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague. My heart goes out to his family as those of us in his pretend one hold on to the memories of our intense and beautiful time together. The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I've ever known."
Lorraine Bracco — who played Tony's therapist, Jennifer Melfi — was a longtime Palisades resident. "We lost a giant today," she said in a statement. "I am utterly heartbroken."

Michael Imperioli, who portrayed hot-headed mobster Christopher Moltisanti, was raised in Mount Vernon and Brewster. "Jimmy treated us all like family with a generosity, loyalty and compassion that is rare in this world," he said in a statement. "Working with him was a pleasure and a privilege. I will be forever grateful having had a friend the likes of Jimmy."
Steven Van Zandt, who played Tony Soprano's loyal right-hand man Silvio Dante, produced the Broadway show "Once Upon a Dream," which premiered at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. He expressed condolences on Twitter.

Aida Turturro, who graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1984, played Tony's volatile sister, Janice. "I've not only lost a great friend, but a true brother, on screen and off," she said in a statement. "James was the most generous actor to work with, but more so, a man with a heart of gold."
Among the other "Sopranos" stars from Westchester County are Vincent Pastore, who grew up in New Rochelle and played Salvatore Bonpensiero; and Yonkers native Jason Cerbone, a Concordia College grad who played Jackie Aprile Jr.
