Mother's Day: Martha Stewart, Hillary Clinton celebrating with their famous daughters
Moms all over the world will be celebrated on Mother’s Day this Sunday, including quite a few famous mothers who hail from the Hudson Valley. Some of these moms raised kids who are notable in their own right, and also have local ties. Here’s a look at the four celebrity mother/daughter pairs.
Hillary and Chelsea Clinton: Hillary and her husband, Bill, are Chappaqua residents, and their 33-year-old daughter, Chelsea, an NBC News special correspondent, held her wedding in Rhinebeck in 2010. Earlier this year, Newsday Westchester suggested some places where the former Secretary of State could spend her time now that she was retired from politics (at least for now). Any of the suggested “Hudson Valley hangouts” would make ideal Mother’s Day activities for Hillary and Chelsea too.
Martha and Alexis Stewart: The Bedford-based mogul calls Bedford home (and is currently making headlines for her online quest for love), but Stewart and her 47-year-old daughter, Alexis, also share a connection to Westchester. The two headed up The Martha and Alexis Stewart Foundation, which was based in Katonah. While it doesn’t seem currently active, according to the philanthropy site Million Dollar List, their charitable organization donated $11 million over the years, including a $1 million allotment to the Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mount Kisco.

Phylicia and Condola Rashad: The elder Rashad is best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” one of the most popular moms in television history. The accomplished actress won a Tony Award in 2004 for leading actress in a play, and her daughter Condola, whom Phylicia raised in Mount Vernon, is following in her footsteps. The 26-year-old just received her second Tony nomination for featured actress in a play for her role in “The Trip to Bountiful.”
Vanessa Williams and Jillian Hervey: Vanessa Williams recently celebrated her 50th birthday, and the prolific actress/singer currently stars alongside Rashad in “The Trip to Bountiful.” Williams raised her four children in Chappaqua, and at least one her daughters is making moves to follow her mom into stardom. Twenty-something Jillian Hervey (Williams’ daughter with ex-husband Ramon Hervey) recently launched her music career as part of the duo Lion Babe.
Westchester is actually home to three generations of Williams women. Vanessa was raised in the Westchester hamlet of Millwood by her mother, Helen, and the two co-authored a 2012 memoir called “You Have No Idea,” which recently came out in paperback.
