"American Idol" hopefuls are singing their hearts out in today's open audition at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, with some showing up even before the line officially started at 6 a.m.

This is when the playing field is as level as it gets, as potential contestants pretty much just need patience. After waiting, and filling out release forms, they'll sing in front of producers. That group determines whether each person makes it to the "winners' circle" or goes home.

Those in the winners' circle will then be informed when and where the next audition round is.
