Lyndhurst may look over the Hudson River, but its centerpiece, fairytale Gothic Revival mansion seems to be plucked from a lush landscape across the Atlantic. Once home to former New York City Mayor William Paulding and railroad tycoon Jay Gould, the estate later added the country's first steel-framed conservatory, as well as a rose garden and a fernery. These days, the grounds are open to tours and events that revolve around Legos, crafts and Halloween. For aesthetes with an eye for special-event planning (and a few extra dollars), the mansion is available to rent for meetings and dinner parties.  -Chris Serico
