Fashion comes out from behind the stoves on Friday. As part of its annual Simon Fashion Now event, Roosevelt Field mall is hosting Design Wars, a “Project Runway"-style fashion competition whose models are local culinary luminaries. Among them Toni Contino, co-owner of Mitch & Toni’s in Albertson; Patricia Trainor, co-owner of The Bellport in Bellport; Lisa Kristel, co-owner of South Edison in Montauk and Joan Axelrod Siegelwax, vice president of sales and marketing at Love and Quiches Desserts in Freeport.

The models will be wearing designs by students enrolled in Nassau Community College’s fashion design program. Not only have the young designers been charged with creating a custom red-carpet look, each outfit must include a food-inspired accessory made from kitchen utensils. The winning student will receive a $500 American Express® Simon Giftcard®, with a runner-up receiving a $250 American Express® Simon Giftcard.

The show gets under way at 1 p.m. in the North Court of Roosevelt Field, 630 Old Country Rd., Garden City.
