Hurricane Sandy: Free apps for storm tracking
With Hurricane Sandy approaching, a number of apps can help you track the storm's progress:
Hurricane Track for iOS - Free
This app has four main screens: a radar view, a local satellite view, a forecast and hazards screen, and one that projects the hurricane's paths.
Extras include a storm-specific newsfeed.
iHurricane HD - Free
iHurricane HD offers a full-color, zoom-enabled weather map that lays out the current and projected path of the hurricane marked with waypoints. Users can click on the waypoints for more information, including wind speed, pressure, heading, latitude and longitude, and storm travel speed.
There is also a satellite tab that offers dozens of radar views and a warnings tab with traditional forecasts, marine forecasts, and advisories from the National Weather Service.
USWeather - Free
Though not hurricane-specific, this free app features the largest number of radar maps and satellite images, as well as weather data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
