NBC special correspondent and former news anchor Tom Brokaw has offered his first extensive public comments about his successor Brian Williams, who was suspended following allegations of untrue and exaggerated claims about his experiences reporting on the Iraq War.

At a University of Chicago Institute of Politics forum available on YouTube, Brokaw, 75, said NBC News' investigation into the matter "is very carefully constructed, and we owe it to everybody -- including Brian and his family and certainly the people who work at NBC News who risk their lives everyday, and to the integrity of what NBC News has stood for all these years -- to let the process play out, to hear what the final conclusions are and then deal with it at that point."

Williams, 55, was suspended in February from his job for six months without pay.
