Andy Rooney, who retired as a regular "60 Minutes" commentator recently, underwent surgery for what I'm told was a "minor" condition early last week, but his condition took a turn for the worse, CBS has confirmed.

Here's the statement:

Andy Rooney underwent minor surgery last week and suffered serious complications. For that reason, he remains in the hospital, but his condition is stable. The Rooney family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.
