'Dancing With the Stars': Chaz Bono's run is over

And just like that, it's over: Chaz Bono, easily one of the most controversial contestants in “Dancing with the Stars“ history, was voted off the show Tuesday night.

His parting words:

“I wanted to show America a different kind of man,” he said Tuesday night. “If there was someone like me when I was growing up, my whole life would have been different.” He dedicated his run to “teens who are struggling” with their own sexual identity.

A surprise this was not, considering his and Lacey Schwimmer's low score (19) for Monday's tango. But still, it was a surprise. Bono clearly had voting supporters in the LGBT community, and the judges seemed to be pulling for him even if their votes didn't necessarily reflect that. But as an LGBT advocate and “Dancing's” first transgender contestant, he was also a lightning rod who drew hate mail to ABC and who attracted trolls to blogs (including this one) who offered comments often too reprehensible to post. There were some who loved him and the obverse.

Bristol Palin attracted her own army of supporters and trolls too, but she was a somewhat better dancer who demonstrated improvement over the run of the season. So did Bono, but not as much.

He and Schwimmer landed in the bottom two Tuesday night alongside Maksim Chmerkoskiy and Hope Solo; hot-tempered Maks snipped at Len Goodman last night, and it appeared his reward would be an ejection. But not this week.
