Conan returns to NYC: Monday
The prodigal carrot-topped son - Conan O'Brien (not Carrot Top) - returns to New York starting tomorrow for a four-night run at the Beacon Theater, marking his first NYC engagement since spring's "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour" at Radio City.
Announced at the TBS upfronts, the four-night run is to mark his one-year anniversary at the cable network. Not announced at the upfront: The host will "officiate" at a gay wedding of staffers!
New York Magazine's "The Vulture" reported the wedding last week, with no additional details except to say it will involve said two staffers, thus noting this will not be a gimmick designed to pop ratings because - after all- TV stars never do anything like that. Who are the staffers? Male or female? And - because the host is not an ordained minister - who will legally officiate? TBS did not provide immediate details.
The Vulture did make note of one famous late-night wedding - the nuptials of Tiny Tim and Victoria Mae Budinger on December 17, 1969, that yielded 21.4 million viewers. That curious piece of late '60s cultural detritus was in fact a monstrous ratings gimmick (21.4 million viewers) that was played for as much camp as Johnny Carson could muster. The marriage did not last; alas, the memory of it did.
No word on when the wedding will be held, but if you're a betting man or woman, put good money down on Thursday. There's only one guest booked, leaving plenty of time for a white wedding... Conan's guests next week: Jimmy Fallon and Reggie Watts (Monday); Hugh Jackman and Cobra Starship, with Sabi (Tuesday); Matthew Broderick, Paul Simon (Wednesday); Louis CK, Thursday.
