Emmy picks: Who will win? What will win?
Here we go again -- for the 64th time, come to think of it: The annual Emmys pickathon, whereby a TV critic for Newsday picks who/what he thinks will win on Sunday, while he also dutifully adds this caveat emptor: Some of these picks will be dead wrong and maybe even a couple will be right! So please, do not call your bookies to place bets (I'll add a few more categories later today.).
COMEDY SERIES "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS); "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (HBO); "Girls" (HBO); "Modern Family" (ABC); "30 Rock" (NBC); "Veep" (HBO)
Who will win: "Modern Family."
Who should win: "30 Rock," for an inspired penultimate season -- but no one will complain about "Family" either.
COMEDY ACTOR Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper in "The Big Bang Theory"; Larry David as Himself in "Curb Your Enthusiasm"; Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan in "House of Lies"; Louis C.K. as Louie in "Louie"; Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy in "30 Rock"; Jon Cryer as Alan Harper in "Two and a Half Men"
Who will win: Cheadle. Surprise! Not a great series but Cheadle's good, and the Academy loves big screen actors.
Who should win: Louis C.K. At least he will one of these years.
COMEDY ACTRESS Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath in "Girls"; Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn in "Mike & Molly"; Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day in "New Girl"; Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton in "Nurse Jackie"; Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope in "Parks and Recreation"; Tina Fey as Liz Lemon in "30 Rock"; Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer in "Veep"
Who will win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Beloved by the Academy, her series seemed to get some buzz as the weeks went by. That helps -- a lot.
Who should win: Zooey Deschanel. Good freshman year, but maybe voters got tired of all the news references to the "adorkable one."
DRAMA ACTRESS Glenn Close as Patty Hewes in "Damages"; Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley in "Downton Abbey"; Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick in "The Good Wife"; Kathy Bates as Harriet Korn in "Harry's Law"; Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison in "Homeland"; Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson in "Mad Men"
Who will win: Claire Danes, as close to "certainty" as any one or any show in the entire 64th awards ceremony.
Who should win: Danes.
DRAMA ACTOR Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson in "Boardwalk Empire"; Bryan Cranston as Walter White in "Breaking Bad"; Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan in "Dexter"; Hugh Bonneville as Robert, Earl of Grantham in "Downton Abbey"; Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody in "Homeland"; Jon Hamm as Don Draper in "Mad Men"
Who will win: Hugh Bonneville. The Academy wants very badly to award this worthy series -- but not badly enough to hand it a best drama statue. Bonneville will make up for that.
Who should win: Damian Lewis. Remarkable performance -- particularly the episode in the bunker with the vice president. But Hall, Hamm and Buscemi should win, too. This is a tough category, maybe the toughest this year.
DRAMA SERIES "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO;) "Breaking Bad" (AMC); "Downton Abbey" (PBS); "Game of Thrones" (HBO); "Homeland" (Showtime); "Mad Men" (AMC)
Who will win: "Mad Men." Why? Because if you're an Academy member who voted for it the last four times, why not vote for it again?
Who should win: "Game of Thrones"/"Breaking Bad." I declare it a tie! "GOT" is cinematic in scope and intentions -- another way of saying, awesome special effects and production values (not to mention acting, writing....); and then there's "Bad," one of TV's great dramas. Isn't it about time?
