FX's 'The Americans' finale: Satisfying

As a happy reminder, FX's "The Americans" wraps its first season tonight with an episode titled "The Colonel," and - yes - for fans, this finale works. There'a a dramatic wrap to an arc that's been building since mid-season, and enough of a forward spin that should make the second season even more compelling. And without getting into any plot developments, there's also a nice deployment of an old Peter Gabriel tune, "Games without Frontiers," that provides a suitably ironic musical coda to the now-nearly-over season: ("...Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games/ Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names...")

Now, it seems to me, one outstanding question is this: What sort of Emmy love will "The Americans" get this summer? Fans esteem this show, but the buzz beyond their circle has been negligible - and that can sometimes translate into  diminished Emmy returns. If that happens, too bad because "The Americans" absolutely deserves a few key nods - notably a best actor nod for Matthew Rhys and best actress for Keri Russell - both excellent - and a supporting one for Noah Emmerich. Margo Martindale? Probably a nod in the "guest supporting role" category.
