Huge open for 'The Voice'
"The Voice" hit its regular time period with a bang -- proof indeed that a post-Super Bowl position can be one of the greatest things on earth for a returning show. It easily outdistanced last year's "Glee's" postgame performance, and for NBC, this number also indicates that Sunday's launch dragged in new fans as well as past ones.
Oh right -- the number: 17.69 million over two hours! The bigger number was at 9, in fact: just over 19 million. This gave "Smash" a decent opening number, too, at 11.5 million, or 3.8 in the demo.
Now, what does this bode? NBC will look closely next Monday (duh) to see if the needle moves. Up, and the network is finally seeing light at the end of this endless tunnel. Down, and there's work to do -- but it probably won't be down by much.
"Smash"? Expect a big drop next week. I wouldn't be surprised if this number falls by 4 million viewers. But that would be acceptable, too. NBC does not expect a huge huge hit here -- it wants prestige, and it wants Emmys.
