Jay Leno and Kanye West: Luck or design?

How is ol' Jay Leno feeling right about now - just hours before one of the biggest launches of his career and one of his first guests, Kanye West, is the talk o' the morning?

Luck this good doesn't come along often - in fact, it comes along never.

Maybe the gods of sorta-late-night-TV are smiling on Jay.

Maybe they're saying, you need a guest that will make fifty million tune in tonight.

So, we'll give you Hugh Grant II.

"What were you thinking, Kanye?"

But what if the whole thing was staged - by Kanye, or maybe MTV and the VMAs themselves?

Not for the benefit of Jay, of course, although that extra-megapublicity doesn't hurt anyone.

What if they all conspired this: We need a talker this morning, because - really - Russell Brand isn't gonna say anything controversial about Obama, and he's already ripped and apologized to the Jonas? Outbursts of profanity of any sort by anyone on the VMAs or Movie Awards don't count - they're just beeped out.

Hmmmm. So?

Hey! I've got it. That stunt with Bruno/Eminem worked brilliantly at the Movie Awards! How about someone interrupts someone on stage!  That person needs to be a baaadassss type and everyone would see this in character.

The other one, the Personus Interuptus, so to speak, would need to be sweet and innocent - a beauty with a peerless rep.

Make it early so we can make the 11 p.m. news!

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

So here I sit, wondering: Was Kanye's "outburst" just one....big...act?

Hmmmm....
