Jennifer Lopez denies 'Idol' departure rumors (well, duh)

Jennifer Lopez — who, I suspect, shrewdly planted rumors in a couple places that she's definitely out at “American Idol” — has now shrewdly tweeted that there's no truth to the rumors.

Clever, verrrrry clever: First plant the rumors, then deny them via Twitter. This is (in other words) playing precisely to script.

There is no truth to reports that say I am definitely leaving Idol. All I said was I haven’t decided what I am doing next year.”  In another tweet, this “When I know for sure what I’m doing I will let the #LOVE! RS know!”

Don't you just marvel at the word “definitely.” Oh you're good, J, very good.

And by the way, I'm one of the lovers — you can call anytime.

I've ruminated (see yesterday's post) on why I think this is all just one big play — some of it predicated, reasonably in my opinion, on the ridiculous salary Fox and Syco just handed Brit, leading J.Lo to doubtless wonder, “What am I? Chopped gooseliver?”

Remember folks, it's not just about the money — it's about the EGO. Big stars do not get to be BIG stars because they're not competitive, or because they have modest attenuated little egos. No, the precise opposite.

I'm betting J.Lo's back next season — mostly because she's been a good judge and very good for the show, and she knows it and Fox knows it.
