As part of its long, long, long campaign to unseat "Today," "Good Morning America" just enlisted Katie Couric's services. The former "Today Show" host will co-host next week, taking the place of Robin Roberts, who's on vacation. She'll be hanging with George Stephanopoulos. . .

No official announcement just yet, but both Katie and George have tweeted, so I guess that's "official." Why are they doing this at "GMA"? Publicity! Oh glorious publicity. . .the coin of the TV realm, the mother's milk of TV. . .and so on. If enough people write about this (me!) then enough people will tune in, and maybe just enough to unseat "Today" for the first time in 500-plus weeks. And if that somehow happens, and the splendid irony is then pointed out (by the press, which of course would), then Katie would have a wonderful promotional (that word again) boost for her new ABC talk show bowing in September.

(And if "GMA's" ratings sink next week, then we'll never hear about this again. . .ABC and Katie will make certain of that.)
