Near-record 'Grammys' audience for CBS

A huge audience for last night's Grammys' telecast on CBS -- somewhat just north of 39 million . . . Oh, let's just go ahead and say 40 million. In fact, about 41 million watched from 8 to 11, though that figure -- as figures must -- tailed off by 11:30.
This was the biggest crowd since 1984 . . .
The "Whitney effect" is certainly attributable to this massive turnout -- the second highest in Grammys history -- but CBS also taped-delayed the broadcast for the west coast, which certainly helped as well. (Real-time, live viewing on the west coast of a broadcast that begins at 5 p.m. at the Staples Center is certain to get about a low a number as you might expect -- a reason to tape delay to a time when people are actually in front of their sets.)
To give this big number some perspective, it's bigger than last year's Oscar's telecast, and bigger than the 75th, 78th, 80th and 81st Academy Awards telecast on ABC.
