'Survivor's' final three: Skupin, Penner, Swan
"Survivor: Philippines," returning Sept. 19, will — as you may have heard — offer a second chance to three former contestants who had to leave the game for medical reasons. And we have our names: Michael Skupin, Jonathan Penner, Russell Swan. All are certainly known to longtime fans — Skupin fell in a fire in the Australian bush, Swan was dehydrated and so on. Here are the canned quotes from CBS:
Michael Skupin — SURVIVOR: AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK (2001). First-ever medical evacuation on the series due to severe burns received after passing out into a fire from smoke inhalation on Day 17. “You don’t want to leave. The longer you are here, the longer you want to stay here. And it’s not even about winning as much as playing. The winning will be anti-climatic. The playing is where it is for me.” – Skupin, before being airlifted off the island.
Jonathan Penner — SURVIVOR: MICRONESIA — FANS vs. FAVORITES (2008). Medical evacuation due to knee infection on Day 15. “I can only recommend for the sake of his leg and his life that he leave the game now. He needs hospital treatment. It is not going to get better. It will only get worse.” – Dr. Jessica Sartini, while diagnosing Penner during the game.
Russell Swan — SURVIVOR: SAMOA (2009). Medical evacuation due to dehydration on Day 15. “It was the scariest moment I’ve ever had on this show. In 19 seasons, I have never been more afraid in my life of how bad things were. Russell was in terrible shape.” – Jeff Probst, during the Tribal Council following Swan’s evacuation.
