TCAs 2013: Mike O'Malley on Cory Monteith

Mike O'Malley, one of TV's premiere sitcom stars ("Yes, Dear” and a few hundred other shows I don't have room to mention) and a respected dramatic writer, too ("Justified,“ on which he also starred), will headline NBC's new comedy “Welcome to the Family” this fall.

But he was recently on stage here at the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom for the annual Television Critics Association gathering and, of course, the question came up: Thoughts on Cory Monteith? As Burt Hummel, he was Finn Hudson's stepdad on “Glee.“

Said O'Malley: “I had many scenes with Chris [Colfer] and Cory and I think I had what was probably the toughest scene I've ever acted in my career as an actor opposite him when I had to throw him out of the house because of a slur he used. It was remarkable to me when we were shooting that scene over and over again at the depth of emotion he was able to bring, the sorrow, the shame. ... He was the fictional quarterback on the show and the real quarterback on the set and an incredibly warm guy who was welcoming to everyone on that show. ... He was a very, very hardworking actor. I loved working with him. He was a great guy and I miss him very much.”

Asked if he'll recur on “Glee,” O'Malley said: “I hope so. ... Burt is a very, very important role to me ... I want to continue to honor Cory and his passing. He is my stepson so I certainly hope to be there.”
