NBC announced some time ago that it was adapting Rogers & Hammerstein's uber-classic "Sound of Music," leaving only one or two outstanding questions, besides the 'why:" Whom to play Maria? Whom to play Von Trapp? Carrie Underwood was quickly announced as Maria.

And now, one other answer has been tendered: Stephen Moyer is to be Von Trapp, the hard-driving widower who falls in love with the young woman who comes to care for his restless brood. Moyer's a terrific actor of course, but he's also a vampire, or at least plays one, and a particularly powerful one at that. NBC barely mentions Bill Compton, instead saying, "Last month he starred in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the iconic musical “Chicago,” where he played charismatic attorney Billy Flynn. Moyer is a stage veteran in the U.K., having spent time with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic in England. He has played the lead role in “Romeo and Juliet” as well as several other legit productions early in his career.
