'Veronica Mars' movie gets a green light
Still beloved by quite a few fans (obviously) ever since it ended a three-season run on UPN back in 2007, "Veronica Mars" lives again: as a movie.
But this rebirth is unconventional. The show's creator, Rob Thomas, started a Kickstarter campaign that surpassed the $2 million in donations mark that Warner Brothers said would be needed to revive the show-to-movie project, and voila. (Check it out here.) Remarkably, Thomas kickstarted this campaign just this afternoon.
What's Kickstarter, you ask? It's a crowd-funding web company that launched in 2009. Expect this "Kickstarter" victory to kick-start other campaigns for the dearly departed. (A "Gilmore Girls" flick, anyone?) Bell and Thomas put together a very clever Kickstarter video to pique fan interest, which clearly worked, and should set a template for other fan favorites whose lives were cut short by the fickle finger of network TV fate.
I would imagine Warner Bros.' next demand will be, "Show us the money!" Presumably everyone who pledged funds to get this done has the funds to get this done ... right?

The series averaged between 2.2 million and 2.5 million viewers in its two-year run on the now-defunct UPN and final season on the CW network. Those modest numbers are overshadowed by the intense fan devotion that has kept dreams of a movie alive. Backers are eligible for various goodies, ranging from a PDF copy of the script to be sent on the day the film is released (for a $10 pledge) to naming rights to a character (for $8,000). An appearance in the movie, available to one $10,000 contributor, was snapped up. Crowdsourcing has given filmmakers a new way to get always-elusive funding. At last month's Academy Awards, the short documentary "Inocente" became the first Kickstarter-funded film to win an Oscar. It received $52,000 from 300 contributors.
