Essential government services remain open during shutdown

YONKERS - While a government shutdown is currently in effect, all essential government services remain open for business.

The Westchester County clerk's mobile passport office was in Buchanan on Tuesday filling applications. Passports are still being processed by the U.S. State Department because the program is self-supporting.  Officials say that processing passports at this time will actually decrease from up to six weeks to less than four weeks.

However, all federal functions deemed non-essential have stopped.  This includes civilian workers at Camp Smith in Cortlandt, where 50 people have been put on furlough, and about 1,500 others statewide.
