HICKSVILLE, N.Y - Family and friends gathered today to mourn a Long Island woman who was shot inside a Tarrytown townhouse on Labor Day.

As News 12 has reported, 23-year-old Megan Bookstaver, of Hicksville, was fatally shot by a rifle on Monday.

Police say her boyfriend and his friend were examining guns when one went off, striking Bookstaver in the head.

Bookstaver was laid to rest today at Plain Lawn Cemetery in Hicksville.

Police are calling Bookstaver's death "suspicious," and haven't yet ruled it accidental or a homicide.

Authorities are conducting a ballistic and forensic investigation to determine exactly what happened.

Bookstaver was a student a Mercy College and worked at an animal hospital in Woodbury.
