Caring for Granite Kitchen Countertops
Q. What can I do to clean and polish the granite countertops in my kitchen?
- Dina T., Lake Grove
A. Granite is hard, non-porous natural stone that resists harsh chemicals. But several sources, including the Michigan State Extension, say to avoid harsh cleaners. The extensions recommend neutral cleaners, like Murphy's Oil Soap, which is made from vegetable oil.
Clean often; grit and dirt can scratch the surface of your countertops. Also, protect them from pots and pans by using warming pads.
Another suggestion is to use a mild solution of dishwashing soap for cleaning, then wipe with a clean damp rag. Rinse in cool water.
Your granite tops should have been sealed when installed, and some manufacturers and installers suggest sealing the countertops every six months. This depends on the kitchen traffic. If you have kids and cook frequently, every six months is a good idea. Purchase a sealer from a home center or masonry supply store and try a small amount in an inconspicuous area. Follow the instructions on the container. If the sealer does not discolor or leave streaks, go for it.
