Sealing Granite Countertops

Q. I've heard that it is important to use a silicone sealer three times a year on granite countertops. Is this necessary?

-Susan O., Whitestone

A. Yes, applying a sealer is necessary, but two to three times a year probably is excessive. In most cases, the crew that installs a granite countertop should complete the job by applying a silicone impregnator. This product helps the stone resist moisture and staining and can last up to five years, depending on how much you use your kitchen. In the case of surface sealants, which protect the surface of the stone, these often are applied annually.

Here's a little about impregnators and sealers for natural stone: Impregnators actually fill the pores of the stone with resins and silicones. In this way the stone is protected from staining because fluids are prevented from penetrating the pores.

But many of these impregnators do not protect the surface. Another product, a silicone-based sealer, often is used to protect the surface.

These products offer extra protection and work simultaneously. However, the stone countertop still needs proper care and cleaning. In most cases, you're looking at an annual application of a sealer. Check with your installer or salesperson for care and maintenance recommendations. Installers probably have a preference for which types of cleaners and sealers to use and how often they should be applied.

You can tell if the surface sealer is losing strength by testing the stone with a liquid. Apply moisture-warm water is fine-to the surface of the stone. If the stone turns darker, moisture is penetrating the stone and a new coat of sealer should be applied.
