Condensation in Double-Pane Windows
Q. We have a bay window with five panels. Condensation has developed between the panes of glass. We have tried caulking, but to no avail. Have you any suggestions outside of replacing the double- pane glass itself? -Allen Montagnino, Jericho
A. There's some bad news and good news, Allen. You're not going to be able to fix your existing windows by caulking because you have a bad seal. Once this airtight seal is broken on a double-pane window, condensation between the layers is inevitable. The good news is that your frames (probably vinyl) are in good shape and only the glass has to be replaced. It is not too difficult a job.
Even though some of the windows in your bay are fixed, there should be a way to release the frame. Look for a cap that will cover a screw head or bolt head on the tops or sides of the frames. You can pop off the caps, which will allow you to release the frame. You can then take apart the frame and remove the double-pane glass. It should slide out easily when one of the edge pieces is removed.
You have the option of measuring this glass (don't forget to measure its thickness) and then trying to order a replacement through a glass company.
However, my advice is to first contact the installer of your bay window and its manufacturer. You said the window is 14 years old, but many window companies have warranties that last 20 to 25 years.
If you don't want to do this work yourself, contact a local glass company. It won't be cheap, but it will be less expensive than replacing your bay window.
