Shower and Bath Cleaner
Q. I have an acrylic whirlpool bathtub. I have used a variety of cleansers but am not satisfied with any of them. The tub just doesn't look clean enough to me, and it's hard work scrubbing and wiping. You recommended a cleaner by Zep in your column months ago, but I can't seem to find it. -Lisa M. Geller, North Bellmore
A. I have used Zep shower and bath cleaner for a while now with positive results. It's sold by the gallon and by the quart. Try a local home center or maintenance supply store. I know it's available at Home Depot stores, but if you still can't find it try the Zep Manufacturing Web site (www.zepmfg.com).
Spray on the cleaner and let it set for 3 to 5 minutes before wiping with an old cotton washcloth or part of a towel. This should remove most of the soap scum and stain. Repeat if necessary and rinse.
Once you have cleaned the tub to your satisfaction, use some automobile polish on the entire tub. Try a white polish. Use a thin layer and polish as you would the surface of your car. Be sure to buff and remove all polish residue. Now water and soap scum will bead up, just like rain water on a car.
Repeat the cleaning/polishing routine every three to five months, or sooner if you use the tub frequently.
