Covering a Wood Deck
Q. My husband is eager to purchase a deck-covering product called Durable Deck. It is a vinyl decking surface that covers the existing wood of a deck. I am a bit dubious, but it does sound like a dream come true for folks who are tired of bleaching, priming and painting wood and replacing worn boards. Our deck is colossal, and we have researched Durable Deck and find that it gets good reviews. Do you have any thoughts?

A. Durable Deck is a vinyl covering system for the existing wood on your deck. The vinyl apparently is marine grade that includes ultraviolet inhibitors for protection against the sun. The product's Web site (www.durabledeck.com) includes information on a limited lifetime warranty, but I would be sure to have the system installed by a licensed contractor who has experience working with Durable Deck.
Vinyl has its advantages, including longevity and low maintenance. However, if it were my deck, I would also consider replacing the surface boards and railings with a new synthetic wood decking that has a brushed look and wood grain look. This way, you'll get the look of wood and the low maintenance of vinyl. This synthetic wood comes in several colors and is growing in popularity. You might have to power wash it once in a while, but it does not have to be stained, sealed or painted, and it resists insects, rot and decay. Two companies that make such boards are WeatherBest and Evergrain.
