Eliminating stale air conditioning odors
Over the past several weeks, the smell of the air coming out of my air conditioner has been "stale." The unit is tilted to allow condensation to drain, so why the stale air?
Dave Miller, Smithtown
Several parts on a portable air conditioner can get dirty over time, affecting the smell and temperature of the reconditioned air. First, unplug the unit and remove the plastic cover. Inspect the condensing coils, that metal, fin-like covering. A shop-style vacuum or air compressor will remove loose dirt and dust from the coils. Wipe away grime with a damp, soapy cloth.
Dirt and lint can build up in the flat pan that collects and then drains water formed by condensation. Wipe away this buildup, and look for a drain plug. This plug should be clean so water can drain from the pan.
Finally, clean or replace the mesh or sponge filter in the front grill area. You might be able to buy a fitted filter replacement, provided you have the model number of the unit. Other filters that can be cut to fit are available at home centers and hardware stores. You can wash the sponge filter in warm, soapy water. Filters should be replaced or cleaned monthly during the cooling season.
