Compromising on burial of an out-of-wedlock child
July 2, 2009
While I was married, over 30 years ago, I had an affair, and we had a child. The father is Catholic, and I am Jewish. He agreed that our daughter should be raised Jewish, since I never divorced my husband. When my husband passed away, I told my daughter about her biological father. She expressed interest in meeting him, which she did. A few years ago, she passed away and was cremated, according to her wishes. Her biological father recently contacted me and requested permission to bury some of her ashes in his grave when he dies. I'd already sent him some of her ashes, along with a lock of her hair. I also had made plans for my daughter's ashes to be buried with me when I pass away. Are there any religious restrictions in either faith that would prevent us from fulfilling these wishes?

God Squad: What does faith say about material wealth?
May 14, 2009
During this economic meltdown, the current system of doing business is not working for many of us. Instead of waiting for those in Washington and the corporate boardrooms to produce a solution, I was wondering what God might have to say on the subject.

God squad: The biblical roots of hell and the devil
May 7, 2009
Regarding a previous column of yours about the devil, I'd like to give you some input. In Isaiah 14: 12-15, it states that Lucifer (the devil) was thrown out of heaven because he thought he was better than God. Revelation 13: 7-10 speaks of the war between God and the devil. The Christian belief is that Lucifer was the highest angel in God's kingdom until he thought he was smarter and better than God. He and his angels then tried to take over heaven. That's when God sent him to the Earth until the end of time, when he will be cast into hell. Therefore, God did not make evil; the devil did. God gave Adam and Eve free choice, and they chose evil. Thank you for all your good advice. I read your column every week and enjoy it. God bless your work.

God squad: rethinking a relationship with a cousin
April 27, 2009
I'm a 59-year-old "cradle Catholic." I haven't been practicing for about eight months, but that's a whole other subject. I've been widowed for almost three years and have adult children. Recently, I began a relationship with a man I've known all my life. He's also Catholic and widowed with children. He's two years older than me. We struck up an online relationship, and I admitted I'd been physically attracted to him since our teens.

Parents unhappy about her non-Jewish fiance
April 17, 2009
I'm 24, Jewish, and in a relationship with a man who's Catholic and of a different color. My parents don't accept this relationship and insist I'm only trying to "hurt them" and haven't tried to meet a Jewish man. This is untrue. I love my parents and always have, even though our relationship has been rocky and stressful at times. I feel I've always done what they asked of me in the past, but this is a decision I need to make for myself. I understand their concerns and disappointment, but now they're threatening to cut me out of their life, disown me and pretend like they never had a daughter.

When world's evil poses a challenge to faith
March 21, 2009
I'm rapidly losing my faith. My heart bleeds every time I read about the atrocities and death inflicted upon children around the world. I read where the UN estimates that between 40,000 and 50,000 children die every day due to starvation, mistreatment, illness, malnutrition and war. We're all supposedly God's children, and Jesus said, 'Suffer the little children to come unto me,' but what kind of father would allow such atrocities to befall his children? Children are being struck down mostly as a result of crooked rulers, crooked politicians and the like. We spend billions of dollars on nuclear bombs but nothing to get these kids even drinkable water or bread to eat. Talking about bread, I received a series of pictures over the Internet from overseas of a starving 7-year-old Iranian boy caught stealing bread. As punishment, they spread-eagled him on a roadway, held him down with one arm outstretched, and ran back and forth over the arm with a vehicle so the boy could never use the arm again. Those pictures kept me awake for nights. I was so mad that I prayed to God to wipe Iran off the map. Clergy say, 'God works in mysterious ways,' but that doesn't hold water for me. Can you blame me for feeling this way?

Dieting Tip: Eat Less, Pray More
November 30, 2002
Q. I overeat all the time, but during the holidays, I really overeat. I've heard that you can pray to lose weight. I'm praying hard, but I don't think it's going to work. Any tips? -- B., West Islip
