Fire damages 2 Passaic homes; dozens evacuated

A total of 50 people needed to evacuate from the scene. There were no injuries.

PASSAIC - Fifty people are without a home Monday morning after a fire in Passaic.

Officials say the blaze started at 11:25 p.m. Saturday at 218 Columbia Ave. and spread to a neighboring home. Two cars between the homes were also burned during the incident.

A total of 50 people needed to evacuate from the scene. There were no injuries.

Tenants were able to return to the scene Sunday to see what they could salvage. They are staying in a nearby hotel thanks to help from the Red Cross.

Fire officials have not yet determined a cause.
