"Foot" in NY recycling plant was bear paw
SENECA, N.Y. - SENECA, N.Y. (AP) — It turns out that a decomposing "foot" found among recyclables at a western New York landfill came from a bear, not a person.
Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero (PAH-ver-oh) says a worker at the recycling plant at the county landfill found the object among trash on a conveyor belt Monday and notified authorities. Povero said it appeared to be a human foot severed above the ankle, but it was too decomposed for positive identification.
Deputies took it to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's office, which determined through DNA tests that it wasn't human and was most likely from a black bear.
