It's looking more and more like Darrelle Revis will be ready to play when the Buccaneers face the Jets on opening day Sept. 8 at MetLife Stadium.

Revis said today he took a “huge step” by going full speed in team activities in practice.

“I think this was a huge step today, just getting out there and running, getting the calls, up-tempo type of stuff I was doing,” Revis said, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “So it was a huge step for me and it was a huge day for just being out there and moving around and not having any problems, nothing, no soreness after practice or swelling. So it was a huge step for me.”

Revis, the Jets’ former first-round pick who was traded to the Buccaneers in the off-season, is coming off reconstructive knee surgery. He said he lined up against Bucs star receiver Vincent Jackson in practice, the latest test in his road to recovery.

“I did one on ones. I lined up against Vincent twice today even in team periods,” he said. “We did a lot of run team stuff. I was out there and there wasn’t any problems. He was coming at full speed like the big guy he is and I was out there just playing.”

Revis said he did not experience any swelling after the workout.

It is uncertain whether Revis will get any playing time in the preseason. There’s only one important target date, and that’s opening day against the Jets.

“With this whole situation we don’t want a setback at the end of the day,” he said. “Everybody has got an opinion but you have to approach it the right way and I think that’s what we’re doing. We’re not trying to have a setback. We have 16 games I want to be out there all 16 and even in the post season, so that’s the approach and that’s how we have to look at the whole thing.”

The Bucs play the Dolphins in Miami in their third preseason game. That’s the same place where Revis suffered the injury last September.

“I feel real great today and hopefully there has been no swelling and tomorrow is even better than that and progressing up to the game and we’ll see,” Revis said. “If I do play that will be a call on that day if I’m up or down.”
