SEASIDE HEIGHTS - Gov. Chris Christie toured the Seaside Heights and Seaside Park boardwalk with the towns' mayors to get an update on where they stand on rebuilding after it was destroyed by fire in September.

The governor walked part of the newly rebuilt boardwalk Friday, saying he wanted to hear from the mayors and see the progress before the summer season.

Jersey Shore residents say they were happy to have him back. "People get on him all the time," says Laura Hemingway, of Toms River. "But I like the man."

Christie spent time listening to the Seaside Park and Seaside Heights mayors detail progress since fire ripped through the boardwalk that had only recently been rebuilt after Sandy.

Town officials said they will be open in some capacity this summer. "I think Saw Mill will be open and ready for business as the anchor there, certainly by Memorial Day," says Seaside Park Mayor Robert W. Matthies. "And the boardwalk by summer season."

"It is our goal to make sure that this summer is better than last summer was," Christie says. "We believe that our businesses are more prepared. We know that our hotel, motel owners are prepared."

Construction is ongoing for the new boardwalk, but officials say the Jersey Shore is open for business.
