As you may well know, every week, Newsday nominates the athletes of the week for each sport and puts them on a full page in the Sunday high school section.

David Spampinato was getting frustrated with his at-bats. He said he was seeing the ball well all day, he just wasn’t able to put it in play.
When Spampinato finally did put it in play Thursday, it turned out to be the biggest hit for Manhasset in its 6-3 home win over Plainedge in League A-II.

John Danielo thought his high school athletic career was over last November.
Danielo, a senior who plays football, basketball and baseball at Plainedge, discovered a lump on his right arm several days after taking a hit during a football game. Danielo said it grew so large that it eventually inhibited his ability to make a play on the field.

Alec Ludwig scored his 1,000th career point Thursday night during the first quarter of Great Neck North's 59-51 win over Plainedge.
