Businesses harmed by Hurricane Sandy will have extra time to make payments on their workers' compensation insurance policies, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.
In a statement, Cuomo said the New York State Insurance Fund would extend payment deadlines for policyholders in Orange, Richmond, Rockland and Westchester counties, which were declared disaster zones during the superstorm earlier this month.
"Local businesses are still trying to build back after Hurricane Sandy, and we are committed to continuing to help them recover in the weeks and months ahead," Cuomo said. "Communities impacted by the storm depend greatly on the ability of our local businesses to have the flexibility and resources they need to get back to business."

Businesses with a premium payment due between Oct. 26 and Dec. 26 can now make their payments through Jan. 26, the state said. The insurance fund also won't cancel policies or issue penalties during that period. The fund already put cancellations on hold for 8,903 policyholders in the immediate aftermath of the storm, the statement said.
