Since we're heading toward a rather quiet time from the Islanders as the NHL playoffs begin without them, I'll have a couple posts here of interviews with players from Monday's breakup day.
Today, we'll begin with John Tavares. He spoke on a variety of topics, including the chemistry "hiccup" the team suffered when Matt Moulson was traded, who he thinks might work well on his left side next...Read more »
ST. LOUIS -- Of all the questions that could be asked about the Islanders right now -- too many to list here, and I’ve got a plane to catch -- here’s one:
Is it time to rebuild the rebuild?
Garth Snow earned praise for jumping in as an inexperienced general manager seven years ago and committing to a bottom-to-top rebuilding of the organization. He stayed small-budget and low-key, amassing...Read more »
Jack Capuano admitted he’s not a “stat guy” after the Islanders’ latest debacle on Tuesday -- don’t get excited, advanced-stats gang, he wasn’t even talking about those -- but even he had to mention the most ridiculous of all the ridiculous numbers coming out of this 8-15-5 team.
The Islanders are now 0-13-3 when scoring two goals or fewer. In a defense-first league, in a division where teams...Read more »
PITTSBURGH -- Jack Capuano said he wants to go with a more veteran lineup against the Penguins on Friday night, so he’s shuffled the deck a bit.
Thomas Vanek is back, and that was a no-brainer. After missing five games with a strained upper-body muscle, Vanek did not even need to skate Friday morning to pronounce himself ready to go for the first time in nearly two weeks. He’ll be back with...Read more »
Pierre-Marc Bouchard returns to the lineup Tuesday night for the Islanders and both of Jack Capuano’s rookies will be healthy scratches against the Sabres.
Capuano said he’d yet to make a determination as to which forward will come out of the lineup to allow Bouchard to return, but it was likely to be Brock Nelson, who was a healthy scratch in Chicago on Friday.
Matt Donovan, the Isles’...Read more »
CHICAGO -- Kevin Poulin is in goal, Cal Clutterbuck is in the lineup, Matt Moulson is en route and Brock Nelson is a likely scratch.
There are a few changes coming for the Islanders on Friday night here against the Hawks, topped by Poulin getting his first start of the season in net after Evgeni Nabokov had three strong games.
Nabokov will play on Saturday in Nashville and it was just...Read more »
A few notes off the Friday morning skate here in Newark:
-- Jack Capuano will go with the four lines and top six defensemen from the last week of training camp, meaning Eric Boulton is out among the forwards and Matt Carkner and rookie Griffin Reinhart will sit among the defensemen. Matt Donovan will make his first Isles appearance since 2011-12, and Brock Nelson makes his regular-season debut.

Some notes from Thursday’s Isles-Devils game in Newark:
-- Jack Capuano was particularly pleased with the work of his very inexperienced defense against a Devils team that had about 75 percent of its opening night roster on the ice. Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Andrey Pedan and Scott Mayfield all played very capably; Mike Dalhuisen, the 24-year-old out of The Netherlands and Quinnipiac University...Read more »
Ryan Pulock has only been on the ice for about an hour for his new organization, but already he has developed a reputation. If there’s one thing you his fellow prospects learned about him on Tuesday, it’s that you don’t want to get in the way of his shot.
“He’s a big, strong kid and hopefully you don’t get hit with one of his shots in front of the net,” Brock Nelson said.
Pulock, who...Read more »
