Lubomir Visnovsky returns to the Islanders lineup on Monday night after missing 46 games with a concussion. That’s good news for the team’s defense corps.
“It’s basically like picking up a veteran at the trade deadline,” Thomas Hickey said. “He played such big minutes for us, first-unit power play, last couple minutes of a game. For us young guys, we’d never had those experiences, so it took...Read more »
A few notes after another two-goal rally by the Islanders to beat the Rangers:
-- I noted it a bit on Twitter throughout the game and even Jack Capuano didn’t let it go uncommented upon afterwards: The bad start Tuesday night had a lot to do with the John Tavares line. True, both Rick Nash goals came off near-misses at the other end -- the puck hopping on Tavares off a two- on-one and Thomas...Read more »
Thomas Hickey is in the lineup for Wednesday’s visit from the Jets, shaking off the bruised ankle he suffered blocking a shot on Saturday.
That’s good news for the Isles and their depleted defense corps, which could ill afford to lose another regular. Aaron Ness goes back in after sitting the last two games in place of Radek Martinek.
“It’s definitely fair to say we haven’t been at our...Read more »
Some notes off Monday's skate:
-- Islanders coach Jack Capuano said Monday after practice that defenseman Thomas Hickey, who left Saturday's game in Philadelphia after taking a shot off his foot, is “day-to-day.”
Capuano did not provide any further comment regarding Hickey, who is one of the team’s more reliable defenseman. The Islanders’ defense has been marred with key injuries as...Read more »
The Islanders are in trouble on defense -- bigger trouble now that Thomas Hickey, one of the few remaining reliable defensemen, is likely out.
The Rangers need to make a change and want Michael Del Zotto to be the one moving out.
Here is a not-so-modest, but sensible, proposal: A real trade between the Isles and Rangers.
Garth Snow has been working the phones to find a defenseman...Read more »
COLUMBUS -- We don’t need another 1200-word breakdown of what’s doing with your Islanders today. But we can dive into some of the bad and some of the good coming out of Thursday’s 1-0 loss to the Hurricanes:
-- Atop the list of bad things is the power play, now at 0-for-21 and sliding. It is also 0-for-18 since Thomas Vanek arrived, though John Tavares’ goal in DC was essentially a PPG, since...Read more »
Jack Capuano said Friday morning that the Islanders’ game with the Predators on Friday night at Nassau Coliseum is “a big game for a few guys.”
He wouldn’t elaborate, as usual, but let’s take a look at the evidence from this preseason to see who needs to have a productive night:
Like any rookie, Donovan needs to take advantage of an opportunity in a game. He’s definitely...Read more »
Thomas Hickey didn’t get his name on the Stanley Cup, but he was on hand when the Kings won it last June. Hickey was the No. 4 overall pick by the Kings in 2007, but never played a game for L.A.
After joining the Isles on waivers in January, he’s had a big hand as one of the top four defensemen in what the Isles achieved this season -- his only goal was the OT winner in Montreal in February...Read more »
Andrew MacDonald jokingly called Lubomir Visnovsky and Thomas Hickey the Isles’ “Twin Towers” defense pair.
But the 5-10 Visnovsky and the 5-10 Hickey have been perhaps the Isles’ steadiest defense pair at even strength. Visnovsky leads the Isles with a plus-12 rating and Hickey is right behind at plus-10.
Five or 10 years ago, no NHL coach would dream of pairing two under 6-foot defensemen...Read more »
