Brian Strait and Evgeni Nabokov, two of the Isles’ injured regulars, got back on the ice Monday morning.

Nabokov has been out since injured his groin on Nov. 16. He will likely join the Islanders on their five-game road trip that begins on Thursday in St. Louis, but it’s unlikely he will play until after the team returns home.

Strait has been out since Oct. 22 with a mysterious ailment,...

Still no timetable for Visnovsky, Strait

The most maddening part for Jack Capuano and Garth Snow regarding the two injured defensemen, Lubomir Visnovsky and Brian Strait, is that both players’ injuries are so nebulous.

Visnovsky still has not reported back symptom-free to the team, now 29 days after suffering a concussion. Even when Visnovsky, who was sent to a specialist in Minnesota two weeks ago for an exam, does finally get to...

What's wrong with the Islanders?

New York Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov gets beat

(Credit: MCT)

RALEIGH, N.C. -- It’s time to ask and break down the following question: What’s wrong with the Islanders?

Let’s dive in.

Is it the goaltending?

Certainly, Evgeni Nabokov has not been good enough at times this season. The difference between what I like to call “Twitter Reality” and “Hockey Reality” is that not every goal in a bad game such as Tuesday’s is the goaltender’s fault....

Heading into Isles' first preseason game . . .

A few notes on the first preseason gameday, with the team in Regina and Calgary and me... not.

-- We’ll have line combos and defense pairings after the Isles skate in Regina later this morning (both game rosters are skating in Regina, then the Calgary group is flying there). But you can assume that Jack Capuano will stick with the lines he drew up for the first four days of training camp,...

Pittsburgh -- Jack Capuano wouldn't say who will play on the top defensive pair with Travis Hamonic in place of Andrew MacDonald, who is out for the remainder of the postseason with a broken hand.

That spot most likely will go to either Brian Strait or Mark Streit. If it's Strait, that would be quite a jump from the beginning of this season, when the Isles scooped him...

What the playoffs mean to me: Brian Strait

Brian Strait was a bit sour that the Penguins let him go on waivers in January; now, he’s looking to remind Pittsburgh that it made an error in letting the 25-year-old defenseman go.

Strait will be on the blue line with the Isles for this series and here’s what he thinks of the wild ride he’s had this season:

“Just thinking about it, it’s kind of fitting we’re playing the Penguins. When...

John Tavares gets sentimental about Nassau Coliseum

(Credit: Jim McIsaac)

The Islanders' move to Brooklyn isn’t scheduled to occur until the 2015-16 season, but an accelerated timetable is always possible.

Yet for John Tavares, the countdown for leaving Nassau Coliseum has already started. And he’s getting sentimental about it.

"There’s been a lot of special moments, a lot of great things have happened in this building,’’ he said after Monday’s practice....
