RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Isles got back to work on Wednesday, trying to erase the bad memories of the second period in Tuesday’s 6-2 loss to the Caps in Washington.
“For me, it was the first time all year I didn’t think we channeled our energy the right way,” Jack Capuano said. “There was a lot of frustration on the bench and I thought it carried over in that period.”
The Isles gave up five...Read more »
RALEIGH, N.C. -- It’s time to ask and break down the following question: What’s wrong with the Islanders?
Let’s dive in.
Is it the goaltending?
Certainly, Evgeni Nabokov has not been good enough at times this season. The difference between what I like to call “Twitter Reality” and “Hockey Reality” is that not every goal in a bad game such as Tuesday’s is the goaltender’s fault....Read more »
WASHINGTON -- Jack Capuano is going back to Evgeni Nabokov in goal on Tuesday here against the Capitals, despite Kevin Poulin’s solid outing in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Bruins -- and Nabokov’s shaky outing in the 5-4 shootout win over the Senators on Friday.
“You look at the history, Nabby has played well here,” Capuano said of Nabokov, who is 12-1-3 with a 2.09 GAA and .926 save percentage...Read more »
CHICAGO -- Kevin Poulin is in goal, Cal Clutterbuck is in the lineup, Matt Moulson is en route and Brock Nelson is a likely scratch.
There are a few changes coming for the Islanders on Friday night here against the Hawks, topped by Poulin getting his first start of the season in net after Evgeni Nabokov had three strong games.
Nabokov will play on Saturday in Nashville and it was just...Read more »
Some notes from Thursday’s Isles-Devils game in Newark:
-- Jack Capuano was particularly pleased with the work of his very inexperienced defense against a Devils team that had about 75 percent of its opening night roster on the ice. Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Andrey Pedan and Scott Mayfield all played very capably; Mike Dalhuisen, the 24-year-old out of The Netherlands and Quinnipiac University...Read more »

Kevin Poulin didn’t get much work in goal after being called up two months ago, but he’s still part of his first NHL playoffs at 22. Here’s what the goaltender thinks of this moment:
“Personally, every year you make the playoffs, it’s a good year, right? Unfortunately my first year I got injured, we didn’t make the playoffs. Last year we made it in Bridgeport, fell in first round.
“This...Read more »
PHILADELPHIA -- The workload is not getting to Evgeni Nabokov, who is backing up Kevin Poulin on Thursday night against the Flyers.
“Half of this game is the mental part,” Nabokov said after the morning skate. “You get in a groove, you just need to take care of yourself mentally. Physical part is not that hard, really.”
So Nabokov, who has started 15 of the last 16 games for the Isles...Read more »
An NHL lockout is not a big benefit to NHL players, who either play overseas in leagues with less talent or spend a few weeks trying to stay in shape by skating with a handful of players in an informal setting.
It seems to be especially tough for goalies, who need to get in a rhythm to be good -- witness Evgeni Nabokov coming off a year of not playing last season and then injuring his groin...Read more »
