PATERSON - Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old in the deadly shooting of a 12-year-old girl who was shot while riding a scooter in a Paterson neighborhood.
Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes says Jhymiere Moore is charged with murder and weapons charges in the death of Genesis Rincon.
Investigators say more arrests are possible in the case.
The prosecutor says Moore turned himself in to law enforcement, but his lawyer says they have the wrong man.
Attorney Harley Breite says Moore was being pressured to surrender, but further investigation will prove Moore did not pull the trigger. "He's innocent and he's not going to flee from the pursuit of the truth," Breite says.
Valdes says Moore shot a handgun from a moving car, striking Genesis Rincon in the head as she rode a scooter with two friends Saturday night on Rosa Parks Boulevard near Warren Street. Two other children who were with her were not injured.
"Someone asked me the other day if she was in the wrong place at the wrong time," says Acting Chief of Police William Fraher. "That's not the case. She was in her place, in her time, and she had every right to assume she would get home uninjured."
Authorities say Rincon's death is the latest in a spike in Paterson gun violence and at this pace, the city could see more fatal shootings this year than last.
Mayor Joey Torres has announced 26 new officers will be added to Paterson's police force by the end of the month.
Moore is charged with first-degree murder and two second-degree weapons offenses. He's being held on a $2 million bond. His first court appearance is Friday.
