Like a well-composed photograph and a finely drawn illustration, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep take different approaches to their respective portraits in "Doubt," John Patrick Shanley's film adaptation of his Pulitzer-winning play. Shanley's flat-footed direction keeps the two actors from meshing their styles, but it's a pleasure to see them at work in a single film.
