The adage advises authors to write about what they know and Helen Murdock-Prep of Huntington has done just that. The theater educator, who has directed high school plays at Cold Spring Harbor High School and middle school performances at Finley Middle School in Huntington and Old Field Middle School in Greenlawn, has penned a teen novel called "High Drama" about putting together a high school musical at an exclusive private school.

Murdock-Prep will appear at 7 p.m. May 26 at the Book Revue, 313 New York Ave., Huntington, to answer questions about the novel, which is meant for teens who are at least in high school. Two of her former drama students will act out an excerpt from the book.

"The theatrical rehearsal period can be kind of a nightmare," Murdock-Prep says. Her self-published story includes helicopter parents, a staff tech director in an inappropriate relationship with a student and the rumor of the theater being haunted by a dead student.

"I did the book in diary format so you could see it unfold over eight weeks," Murdock-Prep says. The diary is penned by fictional theater director Kelly Graham of the Samuel P. Chester Academy.

The event is free, but the book is $18.
