Looking for something fun to do? Visit Paint A Piece in Commack, and paint your own pottery. The owner of Paint A Piece, Stephanie Giardina, was great. She took time out of her busy schedule to give us a tour of her studio, as well as answer some questions for our Kidsday readers. While she was talking to us, we also made our own fancy Halloween pieces.

We asked Stephanie what inspired her to open a pottery studio here on Long Island. Stephanie said, "I was inspired by my mother. My daughter decided to paint a ceramic bowl to cheer up my sick mother. I noticed how happy people around me were when they were painting and how happy people were when they would receive special handmade gifts. Today my mother's bowl is on display, at the studio, and the studio is dedicated in her honor."

We wanted to know how long it takes for a ceramic piece to be ready. She said, "It takes seven to 10 days from start to finish. After the ceramic is painted, it's put in a green glaze, which turns clear after it's put in a special machine called a kiln. The kiln gets so hot, the pottery takes a few days to cool, glaze, and set. Your piece of art is then ready for pickup."

We liked what we were doing but we wanted to know what other artistic things kids (and adults) can do. Stephanie said, "Here at the studio, we paint on canvas, do candle making, and glass fusing."

We love going there and we wanted to know why she liked it so much. She told us that art is important to her because it makes people feel happy. When people paint, they show a lot of emotion and feeling in their work.
