I volunteer at the Golden Paw Society cat shelter in Huntington Station.
The shelter takes cats from other shelters, takes care of them and tries to find them new homes. Our shelter is different from most because the cats are in a cage-free environment. Only the very young kittens or sick cats are in cages. The rest are free to roam so they can get used to being in a real home. The volunteers clean the litter boxes and the house, and they groom and cuddle with the cats. That's the part I like.
Many of the cats are very playful and will all make great pets. It always makes me smile to help the cats, and it makes me very happy when a cat gets adopted. If cats stay at the shelter for a long time, we send them to pet stores so more people can meet them and possibly adopt them.
If you would like to learn more, go to goldenpawsociety.org or visit the shelter at 260 Broadway in Huntington Station.
