We declare this Wimpy Kid month! Author and artist Jeff Kinney just unveiled the cover of his new book, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down,” live in front of 300 excited students (and us!) in Manhattan as millions of other worldwide fans watched online.
The cover is light red with letters that look like cheese. Jeff said the cover is hinting that the “cheese touch” from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” may return. Before the big reveal, we had a chance to talk to Jeff in his dressing room.
Jeff told us that when he started writing books, he meant to write them for adults, but kids became his audience. He told us lots of other fun facts. For example, he explained that he invented the font he uses in his books from his own handwriting and every Wimpy Kid book is exactly 217 pages long.
Also, Jeff just opened his own bookstore in his town, Plainville, Massachusetts. The store is called An Unlikely Story. At that store, kids can take tours of Jeff’s studio and even try out his art desk! Another fun fact is that he has a secret talent, juggling. Jeff added that he works 17 hours a day and plans to visit 11 new countries this year. We are thankful that Jeff Kinney took time out of his busy schedule to meet with us.
We did ask him to tell us about his new book and he said, “I can tell you very little about the new book because I’m still writing it. I tend to write my books very very late all the way up until the deadline. So a lot of this new book that’s a mystery to me. I do know that Greg going to learn a musical instrument. At least for now that’s still in the book. And I think Greg might go to college for a little while. That would be different right?”
We had an amazing day! We cannot wait to read his new book when it is released on Nov. 1, 2016.
