High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of a career in the arts are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts. Auditions are being held now through June.

The school, which has its own campus in Syosset, offers five areas of concentration: dance, fine arts, filmmaking, theater and music, says interim principal Jack Lenson.

Students spend 2 1⁄2 hours a day at the school and are bused back to their original high school for academic studies during the rest of the day. Auditions and the program are free.

Interested students entering grades 9 to 12 can get applications and audition requirements from their guidance counselors, nassauboces.org/lihsa or by calling the school at 516-622-5678. Acceptance is based on talent, enthusiasm, motivation and potential, according to the school. Close to 100 students currently participate in the program, Lenson says.
