10 must-try fall trends
There's no fighting it. Stores are hauling out their knits, the long sleeves, the wool and velvet and mohair. We've tallied up the seven top trends in clothing and three top trends in shoes worth checking out for fall. Might as well start browsing -- after all, days are getting shorter.
THE BIKER JACKET Biker jackets are everywhere for fall, embossed, embellished and, yes, even blushing, as in Club Monaco's Delaine jacket, $595, in pale pink leather with black contrast zippers; at select Club Monaco stores and clubmonaco.com.

OVERSIZED OUTERWEAR Designer versions on the runway were fun but impractical. Who can drive or squeeze into the subway when you're a woolly mammoth? Many versions actually produced will be tamer, but still roomy enough to get on over your blazer. H&M's coat is a good compromise--fluffy but short; $59.95 in September at H&M stores and--yes, finally!!--online at hm.com.
Oversize outerwear is perhaps the most useful trend--you'll never have to worry again if your blazer or cowl-neck sweater fits under your coat. Milly's faux fur and leather coat; $750 in September at shopbop.com
Women wearing sweaters or blazers who've been struggling to fit into the skinny-armed coats of recent seasons will welcome fall's roomier outerwear. This Simply Vera Vera Wang cropped cape, $68, a good option for early fall, hints at the oversize trend with its full, rounded shoulder; at select Kohl's stores and kohls.com.
THE FISHERMAN'S KNIT Designers have taken the big and bulky fisherman's knit sweater for men and slimmed and softened it for women this fall. Massimo Dutti even jazzed up his wool and cashmere pullover with side zips; $98.50 in late August at Massimo Dutti, Manhattan, and massimodutti.com.
THE BOY'S CLUB No one does prep-school chic like Tommy Hilfiger, interpreting menswear standards for the ladies, here with a navy blazer, $349, sweater, $99, Prince of Wales skirt, $229, and high-heeled loafer boot looking like schoolboy socks, $399; at Tommy Hilfiger, Manhattan; or search for similar looks in Hilfiger's collections at select Macy's and macys.com.

A REAL HEEL Spindly stilettos make way for stacked, stout heels, stable enough to run around in all day, slick enough for night. Here, Rag & Bone's Waxed Suede Kinsey Boot; at ScoopNYC shops in East Hampton, Greenvale and Manhattan; and scoopnyc.com.
THE BOYFRIEND Oxfords, spectators and men's-style lace-ups abound, like these Stanny oxfords from American Rag; $49 at select Macy's stores and macys.com.
PONY UP The furry trend from past years grows, from sneakers to Vince's classy Claire haircalf pumps; $395 at shopbop.com.
